THE
WATER PROJECT Organized by
Dee Portnoy with the Lighthouse Charter School |
In collaboration with the Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis, Deirdre Portnoy brought together nine 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from the Lighthouse Charter School, as well as a teacher and a parent, to study and photograph the waters of the Hyannis Harbor and Lewis Bay. Dee Portnoy met with them first in Orleans to outline the project and prepare the students for making photographs. On a second day, they traveled to Hyannis. A scientist from the Lewis Bay Research Center met the students at the Maritime Museum and gave them an overview of the maritime and ecological functions of a Cape Cod harbor and bay. The students then boarded the Museum’s Sarah, a replica of a traditional Crosby Catboat, and sailed around the harbor and bay, photo-graphing the waters around them. The captain of the boat spoke to the students about the historic boat and the methods of sailing a catboat. On a third followup day, Dee assisted the students in editing and organizing their images. |
